How forces make things stick?


Knowing what something is called is a long way from knowing how it works. That was a lesson that Nobel Prize-winning American physicist Richard Feynman (1918-1988) used to teach. So let's forget about adhesives, acetates and acrylates and try to figure out why one thing sticks to another. If you want a short answer, the word is "forces".


People stick to the surface of the Earth despite the fact that the planet rotates at high speed, and there is even no glue on the soles of their feet. The reason is simply that gravity binds us to the planet with enough force to prevent us from launching ourselves into space. But gravity is not enough to keep us permanently in place. If we provide greater forces, for example by using our muscles to move our legs and jump into the air, we can "unstick" and go somewhere else. So you don't always need a drop of glue to stick things together. That is blindingly obvious every time it rains on your window. Instead, it would just spread in a very thin layer on the glass, like oil does when spread on water. But the adhesive forces are still quite strong: some of the water droplets that stick to the window are surprisingly large.
